Varsity/JV Cross Country · Cross Country State Championships

The boys and girls varsity cross country teams competed today at the state championship.

The boys were hoping to repeat as the state champion team but narrowly lost to St. Pius. Only two points separated us – that’s under a second in a closely run race like this! In addition to leading the team to the runner up trophy, we are proud to say that Christian Gonzalez is the individual state champion! Eoin McNally is the individual runner up. Having two boys on the same team go 1-2 in the state meet is incredibly rare. The rest of the boys team today was (in finishing order):Jake Westing, Billy Carlton, Daniel Blaich, Ethan Yankovich, and Martin Scholl.

The girls also are bringing home a trophy – they took 4th place in their race. They were led by Poppi Florence and Gabby Malerba who took 17th and 18th place. This is the highest finish ever for a Decatur girls’ team and they have worked incredibly hard this season. The other five girls on the team are: Adeline Carlton, Grace Osborn, Alexis Siegler, Calla Ebersold, and Averill Payne.
